This series references the work of National Geographic illustrator Else Bostelmann, a pioneer in the field of naturalist illustration and creator of a well-known depiction of the battle between a giant squid and a sperm whale published in 1935. The Dead Sea paintings portray deep-sea creatures from the twilight zones of the ocean as well as those from shallow depths, presenting them as family members through familiar conventions of portraiture. The wallpaper background completes the installation’s attempt to familiarize, domesticate and even fascinate the viewer with these strange bioluminescent animals from some of the least-explored depths of the sea.
