ARTISAN GALLERY

Oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches, 1990

(Private collection, Maitland, Florida)

The painting of the gallery was comissioned by local gallery owners and was one of the most enjoyable (but also most time consuming) works to paint. It consists of over forty small paintings, reflecting the lives of the owners. The topics of the paintings range from portraits and still lifes to images of cars, RVs, dogs, and cats. Of course, the artist's predilection for imaginary worlds shows in the topics of several pictures in the gallery.  Of particular interest is the painting held by the woman.  This painting was the author's first attempt to show life underwater; he returned to the topic thirteen years later, when he made his infinitely more complex Under the Sea.  Worthy of additional note are the Russian Matryoshka doll on the desk on the right side and the little footstools resembling the handpainted Polish folk stools which the artist used to make after coming to Florida. The artist's signature is incorporated into a print lying on the coffee table in the foreground.
