A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

Oil on canvas, 48 x 36 inches, 1994

(Private collection, Andrews, North Carolina)

This painting, named after the famous novel, incorporated several unique elements to create a synopsis of the life of its owner.  The owner's childhood in rural Alabama occupies the foreground of the painting, and a symbolic rendering of her successful career as a real-estate agent occupies the background. The details from the Alabama period go as far as a roll of toilet paper in the outhouse (bottom middle) or jumping from a pick-up truck into a pond (right middle). All the green ground in the painting was brought to life by covering it with tiny lighter dots and lines indicating individual stalks of grass. The houses of the town in the background of the painting are based on the buildings around Winter Park's Central Park. The mountains in the very back can be considered almost a prediction of the owner's move to North Carolina several months after the painting was completed. As a point of interest, the distant bridge (near the golf-course) has the title of the painting, the name of the artist, and the date of completion incorporated in its stone wall.
