What a wonderful site. My students at the University of
Missouri will definitely benefit from a site that integrates
text and image so well. Thank you for this resource. It is
truly a model for others.
Assistant Professor of Music, Rhodes College
I teach a general survey course of the history of music in Russia. I found your site this weekend and am amazed at how beautifully it is
done. I am going to be using it in our "smart classroom" to show my students your incredible work. Congratulations.
Alvaro Carvalho, Portugal
Although I'm Portuguese, I'm a lover of Russian art. I just want to congratulate you for your internet site. It is
very beautiful and interesting. It is a pleasure to find places like this in the middle of all the internet
mess. Thank you very much for keeping the site.
Your site is one of the very best in explaining and showing Russian art. I now have a better appreciation of icons and 20th century art -
thanks to you. I have book marked your site for future reference and enjoyment. You have contributed to my trip to Russia and viewing the
great works of art. I will think of you when at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
Vaughn Ormseth, Public Radio Producer, Minnesota
I'm the producer of a nationally distributed chamber music program called "Saint Paul Sunday" and created
by Minnesota Public Radio. I work closely with MPR's online producers to adapt "Saint Paul Sunday" to the network's
website. "Saint Paul Sunday" has created a number of web sites incorporating artwork, audio portions of the program, and text as a way of
drawing listeners deeper into a program's content. While working on our most recent program -- an exploration of "What makes
Russian music Russian?," a broadcast that will feature the music of Prokofiev, Rakhmaninov, and Shostakovich -- I came across your wonderful web site on Russian art.
We would love to use a relatively small number (4 or 5) of the images from your website for our online project. Of
course, we'd credit you where necessary, and would link to your site. Since we'd be using these images for nonprofit and informational use only, I'm hopeful you would give us permission for the purposes of this site. Once again, thank you for the beautiful site.
Thank you so much for putting "out there" such an interesting and beautiful web site. The idea that is ever-evolving is wonderful, also. I wish you and
your students much luck with this and will check back occasionally to see what's happening. I am particularly interested in icon painting. The reproductions on your site are some of the best I've seen so far.
Judy Cody, Editor, Chicago Area Lace Net - Work Newsletter
Your Rollins College web-site is really mind-bogglingly beautiful. I am amazed that with your extraordinary talent as a web-site designer you are teaching at a small college. I loved the
Matryoshka dolls on the home page of the Russian Department and "Welcome" written in Cyrillic. And the paintings! Wow! I love the idea of an on-line picture encyclopedia.
Fr. Luke Dysinger, osb, Saint Andrew's Abbey,
I wish to congratulate and thank you for the exquisite site on Russian painting you have made available on the Internet. The historical
comments on icons and icon-painters are refreshingly clear and helpful. I am a Benedictine priest-monk, and I teach patristics and moral
theology at our diocesan seminary, and mystical theology at our Abbey. I have occasion to recommend resources to my students and to the
oblates of our monastery, and with your permission I will particularly recommend to them your site. Again, many thanks for all the work the preparation of your site
must have entailed.
Mark Plumridge & Morgen Brown, Directors, The Worldwide Art Gallery
Thank you for the brilliant Marc Chagall site you provide to the world wide web. We think it is a very valuable resource and wish to make it readily available to our visitors, so have added you to
The Worldwide Art Directory. Please view your listing at
www.theartgallery.com.au by searching for Chagall Biography. If we have any errors in your listing or you would like to add
your site to an additional category please use the "add a site" form. The Worldwide Art Gallery receives about 1,000 visitors per day so a listing in our directory
should send some extra traffic your way.
Sasha Grishin, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory
Congratulations on this wonderful resource. We are
teaching for the first time in Australia a full course on
Russian art at the Australian National University.

Dear Alex: My hat is off to you and your students for
giving us this splendid virtual museum of Russian
Painting. It was a great honor for me to have played a
small part in its creation. I have no doubt that your
visitors will return again and again to enrich their
understanding of Russian art and to gaze with wonder on
its many treasures. Bravo!!!

Thanks do much for this beautiful Web page! Since I am
Russian myself, I really appreciate it when Russian art is
getting all the attention it deserves. I'm a big fan myself,
and I have enjoyed it very much indeed.
Anna Ryzhikov, San Francisco, CA
Nice site. I enjoyed paintings very much. It's a pity there is no full collection of Russian artists. Bakst, Benois and Levitan are my favorite on the site. Thanks.
Yelena Zhovnikova, Tallinn
It`s a great site! I think that with the help of this site
many people will get to know more about Russian Painting
and those who are already specialists in this area will be
able just to get much pleasure!
Jo Klanovicz, Florianopolis, Santa Catarina
Hi, I'm a student of arts, and I study now at the National University of Santa Catarina.
This site is wonderful, because the study and
perpetuation of our culture is the most important symbol

Thank you for your great online museum of Russian
paintings! I am very impressed by the work you have
done here. It's a visually pleasant and very enjoyable
experience surfing your site.
John Windhausen, Manchester, NH
I very much like and welcome this site. However, I wish
someone would include some examples of Socialist
Realism. Such paintings are not only a vital part of
Russian art history but sometimes are positively
assessed by art critics. Obviously the propaganda
aspects, while often objectionable, are necessary
revelations of Soviet ideas. Thank you for entrance into
your wonderful site.
Sarah Burke, San Antonio, TX
Your site is wonderful. I shall use it for my 19th-20th
century Russian art courses. Thanks to you and your

This is an amazing site .... interesting, very informative and extremely well constructed! Thank you; I knew virtually
nothing about Russian Art before I visited the site, but will be coming back often now to learn more!
Dr Rosalind Polly Gray, The University of Newcastle
An excellent site which is frequently used by students taking my courses on Russian art. Thank you.
Kelly Denney, Indiana
I am a student at Indiana University. I plan (?!) to graduate im May 2000 with a BA in Slavic Language and Literature.
I took IU's Russian Art History course fall semester 1999-2000. I am just looking around to see what everyone else has to
say! It's pretty neat stuff! Thanks! Kelly :)
Paul Clarke, UK
Beautiful site, thank you.
Farid Obineche, London
Very well designed site. Brilliant pictures.
Jeani Mills, Visalia, California, USA
This site is a fantastic resource for me in the production of my Russian icon calendar project for my graphic design
class. I visited Russia 5 years ago and fell in love with icons. You have done a wonderful job with this site.
Paula Veselovschi, Romania
What a great site! However, I think it needs some improvements. I'd suggest some more info on the itinerant painters,
and some of the 20th century ones which haven't been mentioned here (eg. Roerich). Still, this is a

The pictures of the Russian icons are very clear and colorful; they are a great help for me in remembering the slides
I saw during my Russian art course.
Jack L. Ralston, Fayetteville State University, NC, USA
Today has been one of the most thrilling days of the year! I have found your web site and I cannot tell you how it has
blessed me. I would say the site is "sine qua non." I have loved Icons for many years and my home is loaded with them,
as are the homes of my two daughters. When the local Greek Church has its annual festival my wife and I attend, sometimes
with two visits to absorb as much as we can of the Presence. The more I learn, the more I am drawn into the spiritual
arena through the Icons. When I entered your web site, I felt as though I had entered a Holy Place. The overlaying of
successive Icons is overwhelming! If only I could have these as screen savers and have them before me all day! I shall
immediately contact all my Icon-loving family and friends. Thank you and the Rollins College for creating and sustaining
this web site. May the Most Holy Trinity and Jesus' Most Blessed Mother surround you with their love.
Rowena Kelly, Fayetteville, NC
Last semester I took an art appreciation class in college but was a little disappointed that the instructor didn't talk
much about Russian artwork. She only mentioned icons off-handedly, spending far too much time on modern art. That is why
I am so pleased to have come across this web site. My father, a librarian, called me this morning quite excited about
this site and insisted I look it up. Thank you for putting this together.
As a first generation Russian and an artist, I am very pleased with learning about women artists and all other Russian
Artists. Thank you for taking the time to do this. You have a very god website.
Bettie Carmody, Lake Jackson, Texas, USA
I was fortunate to find your web site. Thank you.
Diana K Hansen, Tucson, AZ
Wonderful! As an artist I have always been attracted to Russian icons. Here I saw the beauty and also the history.
Janneth Santos MartĪnez, Madrid, Spain
A very good, instructive and educational website.
I think that your web page is one of the finest I have seen. Thank you very much for doing the work that it took, and
sharing with the public.
Sandy Giudice, Portland, OR
I just wanted to say how much I really enjoy this site! I have a great affection for Russian culture and art
(I was a Russian Studies minor in college). I wanted to do some research before visiting a collection of Kandinsky,
Malevich and the Russian Avant-Garde at the Portland Art Museum, and luckily I found your site--it is a great resource
and the slide shows are a wonderful way to display these incredible works of art. Thank you!
Katarzyna Stamm, Poland, now living in Macedonia
Thank you for a very good, at last a professional introduction to old Russian art. I'll be surely back on your pages.

Gary Arutunyan, Armenia
Sites such as this one make the Internet a much better place
. Browsing through junk in search of a good resource
sometimes takes so long that it turns into an unending journey. So you can imagine how much joy people receive when
they find your site, which is a great source of art, education, culture and intellect combined.
Wendy Derome, USA
Carrie Eliza Turpel, Toronto,
This site has been an absolute pleasure to use. I was so pleased to see Repin's "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan".
I was once told the story that a man attacked this painting as it hung in a gallery. The story was that the man in
question stared into the painting and then screamed and attacked the canvas.
