Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs
The visit to the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs was of particular interest. The museum, which
has a section devoted to the archeological finds pertaining to the encampment of Marcus Aurelius
in the area, provided the foundation for my course in Late Roman /
Medieval Humanities course. The artifacts and the history of the fortification provided an entry into the beginnings of this course. It was vital to halt the invasions of the Germanic tribes who threatened the
military authority of the Romans on the eastern frontier. The burden of this task fell to Marcus Aurelius. Despite
his commitment, integrity, and enormous personal sacrifices, he died near Pécs, and his reign marked the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire's
imperial expansion. The empire was never able to extend
further its boundaries as they were
defined during Marcus' reign. The historic moment has been documented by the opening scenes of the film
Gladiator filmed not very far
from Pécs. My personal experience and presence at the site add
much authenticity to the historical facts and
help create a vivid historical perspective for my students.
