Gregory Bateson, anthropologist and author about the ecological conditions of human existence suggests that unseen relations have a significant impact on physical existence whether people recognize it or not.

In his book Mind and Nature he writes that the capacity to recognize inherent yet unrecognizable relations is learned and not an innate capacity. He used the diagram to instruct his classes to look behind the obvious to the hidden dimensions of relationships that constrain human institutions.
