La signification du sujet est donnée par l'inscription Et in Arcadia ego figurant sur le tombeau : "Même en Arcadie, moi, la Mort, j'existe.'' L'Arcadie était, pour les poètes de l'Antiquité, une sorte de paradis terrestre, un séjour de parfaite félicité.

TRANSATION: The subject's significance is displayed by the inscription Et in Arcadia ego etched on the tomb (at the center of the three figures): I too in Arcadia, death exist." Arcadia was, for ancient poets a sort of earthly paradise of almost perfect happiness.
