New England

Comprised of four colonies that became six states, this region was settled after the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Florida and Virginia. It nonetheless became the trading heart of a commercial empire based on cod fish, whaling and timber that linked the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and eventually China to the colonial settlements and villages of the Early Republic. Cape Cod is seen from the air below as an arm of the land stretched tenuously into the awaiting sea. Formed from the glacial remains of a retreating ice cap ten thousand years ago, the cape's sand dunes and marshes are protected today as a National Seashore.
