VALENCIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES SUMMER INSTITUTE 2001:

THE ART AND CULTURE OF EASTERN EUROPE: THE CZECH REPUBLIC, HUNGARY, AND POLAND UNCOVERED AND REDISCOVERED

August 7th-19th

PURPOSE AND GOALS:

The purpose of the Institute was to expose qualified Valencia Community College Humanities faculty to the history, arts, and culture of Eastern Europe through lectures, video presentations, and readings, followed by two weeks of foreign study in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and for some faculty, Poland. The Institute was organized to allow the participants to incorporate their impressions, discoveries, and newly-gained knowledge into their Humanities classes and to share them with colleagues in order to broaden the range of Humanities instruction at the College.

WHAT YOU WILL FIND IN THIS PRESENTATION:

The following pages contain short comments by the Director, the Guest Scholar, and the nine participants in the Institute about their experiences in Hungary (Budapest, Esztergom, Szentendre, and Pécs), Prague, and Krakow.  Each participant's remarks are accompanied by 6 small photographs showing significant moments and monuments from the trip.  Those small photographs can be enlarged by clicking on them:  the resulting enlargements provide titles and short comments. It is important to note that for easy navigation the enlarged image can be clicked to return to the originating page; this is more convenient than using the "Back" button of the browser. To move from one participant's comments to another, click on their names in the stained glass buttons on the left or right side. To return to this page, click the "Home" button at the bottom of each page.

In the following pages, the navigation buttons with the names of the participants were made from a picture of a stained glass window in the Jewish Museum in Budapest; the decorative margins of picture pages show a statue of St. Stephen from St. Stephen Cathedral in Budapest, a statue of Christ from the Benedictine Church at Ják, wings of an altarpiece from Trencsén (1440-50), Black Madonna from the "Cubist" house in the Little Quarter,  an Art Nouveau bust from a Prague house, and an example of traditional Czech glass.
