India Pictures and Journal

For more than a century, the United States has been a dominant power in global affairs and for more than two centuries Western powers have been the preeminent force in the world system. But five centuries ago, both India and China were perhaps the strongest two states and in the past 30 years have begun to recover their past positions of power through rapid economic growth. There are many predictions of a return to a global system in the next decades where India and China play very important, even dominant roles again. This course is designed to develop a deep understanding of the relationship of the United States, China and India in the contemporary world.

We will consider this relationship broadly to include political, military, economic and diplomatic dimensions. Following consideration of several of the basic theoretical perspectives for understanding global affairs and an overview of the India-China-U.S. relationship, we begin a detailed examination of the details. The trading relationship among these nations is framed around the role of the WTO. The nature and effects of global investment through FDI shapes and defines the gains and points of conflict among these nations. The process of creating regional trading rules also provides a point of focus on economic benefits and conflicts.

We shift to the political-military realm with an examination of the questions of China's new assertiveness in regional conflicts and then consider the nature of the threats posed by each nations to the others. These threats are frequently defined by relative military capabilities, which receive considerable attention. We finish with a look at several specifics points of conflict, including maritime issues and various forms of military-diplomatic maneuvering.

Goals for the Course:

Students will:

  • Develop an understanding of the historical development of US-China-India relationship
  • Understand the trajectory of economic growth for Chinese, U.S. and Indian power
  • Understand the main points of benefits and conflicts over trade and investment
  • Analyze the strategic features of the military relationship of the three nations
  • Consider specific features of political-military conflict
  • Write effective essays about these topics in exams and papers

Grade for the Course:

Two Essay Exams  40%
Research Paper  20%
Class Participation/ Blog  20%
Final Exam  20%

There is no curve for the grade in this course; that is, you must meet an absolute standard set by me to succeed in the course. This means everyone can obtain an "A" but everyone can also receive an "F."

There is no extra credit in this course.

Each student is expected to come prepared to every class and ready to make a contribution to the class period: asking informed questions, offering thoughtful comments, and answering questions posed to the class.

You are expected to be in class for each scheduled session, and you must be on time. Class attendance will taken every day. Anyone who misses more than three classes will be penalized by one-twelfth of their FINAL grade for each absence over three. Thus, a student who misses eight classes (equal to one-third of the classes in this course) and who otherwise earns a "C" will in fact receive an "F" for the course.

Makeup exams: No makeup exams are given "after the fact," that is, after the exam has occurred unless I have been contacted before the exam. If you miss the exam and have not contacted me before the exam, you will not be able to take a makeup.

Research Paper: The paper must focus on a specific issue and/or policy problem in US-China-India relations. You need not examine all three countries, but must do an analysis of at least two of the three nations. The topic must be clearly related to the course. Your paper will be judged on the completeness of the discussion, the depth of the analysis, the effectiveness of the arguments, and the organization and coherence of the paper. Many potential sources for your paper can be found on this website. The paper is at the end of classes as an e-mail attachment.

Students are expected to conduct themselves with complete honesty in all academic work and activities in this course. Violations of this policy include plagiarism, cheating, unauthorized collaboration, submitting work prepared for another course, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty by another student, and violation of test conditions. It is your obligation as a student in this class to learn what these violations entail and to behave accordingly. Ignorance is an unacceptable defense. Violations of the honor include failure in the course and potential dismissal from the university.
