Arawak and earlier peoples, the Ciboney settled the islands discovered and exploited by Columbus and the Spanish colonials who followed these conquistadores in the 1490s.
Arawak people had sophistaicated canoes and trade systems. On Hispaniola they numbered 10 million people and built irrigation canals.
