What do Grades mean numerically

Grades are one means of evaluating your performance.

Numerical Scores based on grades of participants for determining your end of term letter grades.

While you earn points based on evaluative criteria listed in the syllabus, on every assignment, you are also awarded a grade based on the above scale of letter grades. The quality points are recorded in addition to the grade earned.

I keep track of everything you write, informally and formally with respect to five criteria: clarity, length, information, frequency of source citation, and summaries, or your ability to summarize material correctly. These critieria, or CLIFS, further refer to the, organization, logic, informative value, frequency of references to the texts and citation of sources for the written or verbal work you do in class, or turn in during class time.

You may rewrite your papers and by so doing I average the initial grade and scoring to determine the reevaluation of any redrafted essay.

Attendance

In some classes where participating actively in class is worth one fifth to one seventh of the grade going top class can make the difference in getting a higher grade.

One: because you are better prepared, if you listen carefully, to interpret important ideas.

Two: in borderline situations attendance can raise the final score because you earn points for attendance and those points are used to determine a letter grade.

Midterm

In all classes this is the second most important means of determining the scores you earn and the grade you work to get. Usually midterms are a combination of written, verbal presentations, and rewriting of submitted drafts.

This process is an important prelude to a role play exercise, or problem solving exercise where students are asked to further revise their ideas in a formal essay a subsequent verbal presentation of a summary of the final paper for which the drafts were written. Students are strongly urged to take drafts of your essays to the Writing Center in TJs. Look over these vocabulary words to see to what extent you understand what I am saying in class:

Your Midterm is a process that may last a week or may last several weeks and the process requires careful listening, heightened awareness and perfect attendance for the weeks during which the problem solving or discussion, or role playing in a formal negotiation takes place.

Field

In all classes excursions, field trips, or outings can be a significant means for demonstrating your curiosity and practicing your visual acuity for recalling and remembering important ideas when attached to visually significant features pointed out in a field setting. Interpreting landscape, architectural, or other features when outside of the class become a very significant means of determining the score you earn. This is assessed by a formal write-up or presentation of the foundation concepts, keystone ideas and core examples made by the instructor or guests in a field setting.

Interview

In all classes participants are encouraged to make formal write-ups of extended formal discussions with people based on preselected questions based on course material. These interviews should be with people who know from experience about core subjects covered in the class.

Thus the formal written paper reports on the length and details of the interviews and a summary of the matters brought up in several interviews. This makes the process of interviewing one of five or seven important means of determining the quality of your participation and expression in the class. The more impressive the quality of your performance, usually is reflected in your earning a better grade.

Final Project

In all classes this is the single most important means of determining the score you will receive in the class because:

The final essay, project, or research paper deals comprehensively with all of the authors and themes of the class.
The participants make summaries and write up talking points based on their final to share with classmates to accompany and form the basis for their verbal description of the project or paper.
