Mapping ecological, social and economic relations

Carolyn Merchant suggested three concentric circles to envision how ecological conditions changes in human history.

Any ecosystem is a relation in space and time of how living things in an area utilize resources.

 

Another way to visualize ecological energy flows is shown below.

The ecological pyramid depicts the diminution of energy from the productive parts of an ecosystem to the consuming parts of the system as a circuit of surplus energy diverted from soils to bacteria and their plants both by way of animals and by decomposers.
